April County Meeting

Tues, April 17, 2007
6:00 p.m.
Lindgren Hall, Walla Walla College Marine Station at Rosario beach

How can we save South Fidalgo's character?

Unless we work together, the character of South Fidalgo Island is about to dramatically change. Despite overwhelming public opposition in two public forums (83 percent opposed in a January survey conducted by county staff) a subarea plan "Citizens' Advisory Committee" - dominated by development and property rights advocates, thanks to county commissioners Don Munks and Ted Anderson - has voted to recommend changing the island's "rural reserve" zoning of 10-acre minimum lot sizes to what would effectively become city lot sizes. Open House for Sharpes Corner Project

From the Washington State Department of Transportation:

Take your pick. Our engineers want to show you seven design options that could improve the Sharpes Corner intersection near Anacortes at an upcoming community open house. We will host the open house from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 15 at the Anacortes Middle School. Come at any time to see design drawings and speak with engineers, and submit comments, questions or concerns. We will use your feedback to help whittle our list of options down to one preferred alternative.

Even if you can’t make the meeting, you can still get involved. You can call, e-mail or visit our project Web page. Available on our Web site will be design option information, a comment form, and directions to the open house. Please contact Dave Chesson for more information at 360-757-5970, or reply to this e-mail.

This is a good example of another way our South Fidalgo Community Council could help our end of the island. Once our community council is established, WSDOT will contact the council to make sure they get community input on their projects. Mail your SFCC ballot with a 'yes' vote today!

SSF's Endorsements for Community Council

Save South Fidalgo supports the proposed South Fidalgo Community Council, and the candidates listed below. We believe these candidates demonstrate:

  • Leadership by active participation, commitment, trust, and openness.

  • The ability to work with others to resolve problems and reach a consensus.

Candidates SSF endorses:

  • Tom Carson
  • Tom Conroy
  • Harold Harrington
  • Jan Hersey

  • Leigh Sawyer
  • Laurie Sherman

Support the South Fidalgo Community Council!

The South Fidalgo Community Council's information session tonight made clear that South Fidalgo Island really needs a community council to move the sub-area planning process forward. An elected representative body will have more credibility than the appointed Citizen Advisory Committee and will represent our community better.

Save South Fidalgo is endorsing the community council idea and encourages anyone interested to run for the council, and everyone to vote in the upcoming election!

But we also need some good candidates to run for the council. Download the candidate registration form and be sure to postmark it by August 1 (hurry!). Feel free to contact us to let us know you're running.

April County Meeting

The county would like us to meet again on Tuesday, April 17 at 6pm at the Walla Walla Marine Station at Rosario Beach. The announcement notes that the county will present their revised plan for development of the south Fidalgo plan, in response to comments they received at the February meeting.

Save South Fidalgo's proposal for a new planning process, which we submitted at the February meeting, requested three changes:

  1. That the county conduct the studies required by the Comprehensive Plan -- for drainage, soils, water quality, etc. -- and postpone the charrette until those studies are complete.
  2. That the county release the current members of the Citizens Advisory Committee, who are untrusted by the south Fidalgo community, and replace them with a body nominated by our community.
  3. That the county develop, publish, and commit to an open process before resuming planning.

The county has already postponed the charrette and says it will conduct some studies. Let's hope they are just as eager to implement our other two recommendations.

Charrette Postponed

Skagit County may now be listening to us. In response to comments expressed at the February 8 meeting, the county yesterday indefinitely postponed the charrette that was originally scheduled for the end of this month.

That's part of step one in our plan for a fair and open process (pdf). Let's see what happens next.

Toward a Better Subarea Planning Process

Save South Fidalgo released a plan last night for making the subarea planning process fair, open, and honest.

County Meeting Rescheduled for Thursday

The Skagit County Planning Department is holding their next South Fidalgo Island Subarea Community Meeting, this coming Thursday, February 8, at 6:00 pm at Lindgren Hall at the Walla-Walla College Marine Station, down at Rosario Beach. The meeting originally was scheduled a couple of times prior, but was canceled each time because of snow.

The February 8th meeting will be a presentation of the comments and issues raised during the October 18th event that was held at the high school. They have said that the public will get to speak at this event. It is extremely important that everybody attends this meeting, and not let the audience be empty. We must show up and show our solidarity.

To find the Walla-Walla Marine Station, drive out Rosario Road and drop down Cougar Gap Road, as if you were going to Rosario Beach. Just before you go through the entrance gate to the park, you will see the entrance to the college on your right. Drive into the campus and go to the only large building (the campus is small). There's plenty of parking available.

Meeting Wednesday!

Skagit County is holding another public meeting this week, ostensibly to set direction for future subarea planning. The meeting will include an "open mike" period where we can voice our concerns.

It's very important we all attend! Although the commissioners have pledged, in a non-binding letter, to take the "blanket rezone" off the table, spot rezoning of the island could have the same effect. Make your voices heard and join Save South Fidalgo at the meeting.

Transparency in Skagit County Government

Today's Skagit Valley Herald's front page exposé about the Skagit County Commissioners' secret meetings is reflective of all the things we've encountered since we entered this process to save south Fidalgo's rural environment — secretive county meetings, county officials who claim public documents don't exist, and county commissioners who don't follow the law until a court orders them to.

Mark Your Calendars!

Skagit County is holding a public meeting on

Wednesday, October 18
6:00-9:00 p.m.
Brodniak Hall, Anacortes High School
20th and J Ave

Please make the trip into town for this important meeting!

"The meeting will feature a review of previous work, and ask attendees to identify key features and characteristics of South Fidalgo through group discussions, presenting these to the larger audience at the conclusion of the event." Read more from the county's press release.
